1936 Joined Marines.
1941 Joined the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) during WWII in China.
1943 Formed his own squadron (VMF-214), based in the Solomons, consisting of not only new pilots, but also veterans. Some of the veterans had previously been reprimanded for disciplinary problems. They became known as the "Black Sheep" squadron.
1944 Jan, 03 Shot down 3 enemy aircraft, before being shot down himself. He spent the next 20 months as a POW. During this period he was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.
