Anyone interested in aviation must stop by and enjoy this Museum and its wonderful collection of aviation history. The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the items on display. If you are a pilot, it makes for a great flight as the Museum is next to the tower and right next to the parking for visiting airplanes to Torrance Airport. Tell ground control you are going to the Museum and they will direct you to a parking place nearby.

The Army-Lockheed YO-3A is undergoing flight status at Cable Airport Upland California. This was truly a silent airplane that operated at night. Lots of information at www.yo-3a.com. This military aircraft operated in Vietnam 1970-71 (9 planes.) Never took a round, never shot down operating in the range of 1,000 feet with advance Night Vision Aerial Periscope, laser target designator, infrared illuminator. This was the only airplane that Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation Built. Sent to Vietnam in 1970 with a 6 bladed prop, it was later modified to 3 blade prop variable pitch. Did it take the night away from Charlie? Hell yes. Only problem it found more night targets than could be dealt with and there was a disbelief factor. A plane that could operate as low as 500 feet with the ambient noise of the jungle and not be heard and be able to identify a man or a woman on the ground without detection--who in 1970 would believe that? I was crew chief on one of these YO-3As. when I came back from Vietnam I had signed a document not to reveal the secrets of this airplane. I didn't need to sign it. Everyone I told thought I was full of shit and didn't believe me. But brothers, Oh let me tell you, the tale is true. NASA still flies one of these silent airplanes. And before too long, YO-3A 69-18007 will be up and flying at Southern California Air Shows. You will see, but not hear. And you will be amazed and wonder why this technology is not used today.

Great Museum with informative staff. Wonderful displays and the P-51, F-5, F-14 and YF-17 are spectacular. I fell in love with Sabre Jet. A must see for anyone in the area. Ask for Dana and he will give you the complete history.

The Western Museum of Flight at Hawthorne Municipal Airport (formerly the Northrop Museum) has had to close its doors owing to a steep rent increase. They have rented a pair of hangers at Torrance Airport, mostly for storage. They will have a modest museum presence there while they seek a new permanent home.

 Oxford ,UK,

It is well worth looking at the various artefacts and photos on the museum besides the goodies outside. These include YF23 [87-801] which is rather tight and difficult to photograph from some angles. Good pictures can be taken of most others including F14A Tomcat [159830 VF2], a Norwegian F5 [207 and the YF17 Northrop Cobra [201569]. In the side yard was an unmarked F86F and blue Skyhawk [142227]

 Cologne,

The Museum has indeed some really rare aircraft like the YF-23 and the YF-17 but there where parked so close together that there is no possibility to see one aircraft in total. Greetings Thomas

The Western Museum of Flight is more of a restoration facility versus an Air Museum. However, they do have the best collection of Northrop Aircraft in the World. Their collection includes the: Northrop YF-23A Black Widow II (PAV-II), the Northrop JB-1 Jeep (flying wing bomb), the Northrop YF-17 Cobra prototype (forerunner of the F/A-18 Hornet), a Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter, a rare Lockheed Missiles YO-3A Quiet Star, plus others. It's worth a visit if you're in the Los Angeles area.
