Both Minnesota squadrons (109th & 179th) flew the F-89 on active air defense mission beginning in the late 1950s. The 109th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Minneapolis flew the F-89H from 1958 to 1960, when it began flying C-97s. The 179th at Duluth flew the F-89J from mid-1959 through late 1966.
