My alltime favourite airplane, the Boeing 707-420 series was purchased by B.O.A.C., in order to compete with Pan American World Airways and T.W.A. and other airlines like Air France, Sabena and South African Airways, who were leading in the trans Atlantic market, in the late fifties. B.O.A.C.had realized that their Comet 4s were no match for the American jets-the Boeing 707-320 and the Douglas DC-8. But to salvage national pride and to appease those in opposition to buying foreign aircraft, B.O.A.C insisted on Rolls Royce turbofans for their 707s instead of the Pratt and Whitney engines that the competing airlines had. Thus came the Boeing 707-420 with B.O.A.C. calling their aircraft the Boeing 707-436. Air India bought six and their aircraft had the designation of 707-437. Lufthansa, EL AL and Varig ordered this version as well and a total of 37 Boeing 707-420 series were produced by Boeing.
