I was at Forbes 55-59,with 55thA&E. I was assigned the time with the RB-47H. Went to Eliason AK,Incirlik Turkey twice, Brize Norton UK twice, all tdy. I think the a/c shot down was Maj. Palm, he was one of the pilots in AK. My favorite crew was Col. Raffertys. Names I knew well Otto Maas,Jerry Kiss, Nathan Higgenbotham, Tom Wilcox. I was pretty skinny then good for crawling in that 47, I was a camera guy.

The Donkey barbecue RB47H , my dad Joseph Thatcher was one of the crew whose name is on the plane. How can I find out where this plane is now?

I was stationed in the 38th SRS of the 55th SRW at Forbes AFB, Kansas. I was a crew chief on the RB47E named "The City of Topeka". The entire 55th SRW went to Ben GuirerAFB, French Morocco,North Africa for 90 days in the summer of 1955. In 1956 the 55th SRW got the RB-47H aircraft. In Dec 1956 I went to Thule, Greenland with my RB-47H for 120 cold, cold days. I made a couple of TDYs to Little Rock AFB for SAC Evaulation Sqdn. I logged a lot of flying hours on RB-47E and RB-47H Aircrafts as a crew chief. The RB-47 was a sharp looking plane. I can find no models of the RB-47. Does anyone know where I could find one and a cap or patch of a RB-47H? I enjoyed my four years in the Air Force and it gave me my start in aerospace, Missiles and Spacecrafts. Would love to hear from other RB-47 personnel. Keep'em flying!!!!!!!!

My AFSC was 32350C, Defensive Fire Control Technician for the B47 tail guns. I served 1962-1966. Duty stations were 55th A&E at Forbes AFB and afterwards to Plattsburg AFB, NY. I hope to connect with fellow veterans who can verify extensive use of Trichloroethylene (TCE)during maintenance of the B47 gunnery systems.

Please email me with information. Thanks.

I was assigned to the 55th FMS from 1962 to 1966 as a jet engine tech. Permanent station was Forbes but got to travel a bunch, wherever things were happening, since I was single I volunteered for anywhere anytime. Most fun of my life was engine conditioning, sitting in the cockpit and taking all six to 100% and then hitting water alchol injection and riding the brakes to keep it from climbing over the wheel chocks. A great rush, I would sure like to climb into a cockpit and fire them up again. The Cuban missle crisis was something, we knew we were on the verge of neculear war but no one got rattled, just did our jobs. I ended up at Yokota in 65 and 66, never worked so many hours straight with no sleep, was the only engine tech there with 3 planes and getting in another or two ever so often from the Philliphines. Had a lot of great help from other skill sets that I commandered to help me. I would be swinging an engine off a crane and have an electrician on the wing installing the hanger pins. Any body out there that knows me, I would love to hear from you.
