Bill Thomson Glasgow, MT | I worked in the 323rd AMS Nav shop from July 1974 to Aug 1977. When I arrived on station, we still had 70 of the old T-29C and T-29D aircraft. A few months later, the T-29s were gone, replaced with T-37s handed down from the UPT program at Gunter in Alabama. System troubleshooting on the T-43 was unique. The multiple installations of radar indicators, TACAN systems, VOR systems, and the like, meant a readily available source of known good units was right at hand.
I remember doing a LOT of bench repair on RT-471 and RT-220 TACAN transceivers too.
Going to Commander's Call at the base theater was not something most of us were happy about. Listening to LTC Butcher prattle on and on about the T-45 simulator (a T-43 environment clone) was about exciting as watching a piece of metal corrode.
Rafting down the American River from Sunrise Blvd to Goethe Park with Don, Conrad and our FTD class Radar Instructor (his name totally escapes me) WAS however, a blast. One I'll never forget.
I went back to Sacramento in 1991 and to my suprise, I saw a picture of aircraft 0286 on the back cover of the Sacramento phone book. Two years later, Mather AFB was closed as a result of the BRAC program. 09/06/2007 @ 20:13 [ref: 17860] |

When I was an Instructor on T-43's (1982-1985) they were in remarkably good condition for 34-year-old aircraft! 09/04/2006 @ 12:02 [ref: 14070] |
