On April 4, 1943 an SB2A-2 crashed near NAS North Island in San Diego, California. An investigation into the crash showed that a fault with the fuel tank selector had meant that the aircraft had simply run out of fuel. Both the student and instructor were killed in the crash.

The SB2A-2 was a USN order of eighty aircraft (BuNos.00803-00882). They were not carrier adaptable and were characterized by having two nose guns (.50 cal), two wing guns (.30 cal) and twin (.30 cal) guns in the dorsel turret. Aircraft were assigned to stateside training roles.
