Tom LaRoe Hemet, CA | If anyone has Bob Melhorn's E-Mail address please send it to me at adelinatom63@aol.com I was a buddy of his on his first tour of Vietnam working on the O-1E aircraft out of Nha Trang. We both were sent to Danang in August of 1965 to the 20th TASS. I ended up in Hue and Then Dong Ha. Like Bob said the O-1E was like a model A and was easy to work on. we had fun at Danang where our quarters was in Tent City. I have plenty of photos of Nha Trang , Danang ,Hue , and Dong Ha. It seems as if this site hasn't been used for awhile. It is a good site for the O-1E crew chiefs and should grow bigger. I have gotten the word out to other sites that I have visited. 07/03/2007 @ 10:51 [ref: 17004] |
Thomas LaRoe Hemet, CA | I am Tom LaRoe and this is to Robert Melhorn who was a crew chief on the O-1E observer plane. I was your buddy all through your first tour of Vietnam May of 1965 through May of 1966 . I was the one that my baby girl was born while I was ther. We first worked on the Grey Birds (Spook C-123 aircraft) at Nha Trang washing the cowlings off with hydraulic oil. Then when our O-1s came in we were sent up to Danang AB. There Sgt. Webb was there and Sgt. Stephens went to Hue airfield at the citadel. Finally we were both sent to Hue and we met up with Sgt Stephens and Airman Stone (Stoney)My E-mail address is adelinatom63@aol.com. Please e-mail me and have you contacted any other of the guys that was with us like Dechampes the radioman at Danang

Earl F Fisher , SC | I was in the 25th Division, 90th FA Bn during the Korean War ('52-'53) at a forward airstrip. We flew FAC sorties against the North Koreans in L-19 Birdogs directing artillery fire for our units. In addition to three other US Army artillery batallions, (2 aircraft each) the Turkish Brigade were billeted with us, all flying L-19's. The plane was perfect for the missions since it was reliable, low maintenace, withstood ground fire damage and had great loiter time for extended missions. I was working the control tower one day (we were multi-taskers) and got a broken message from a Turkish pilot their assigned targets were destroyed and 8 kilometers north for landing straight in. I tho't it odd he was not going to buzz the field as was their habit when they had a good kill so took a look thru binoculars. Even at that distance it looked like the prop was stopped so I grabbed the mic and asked if he was having problems. In broken english said, "We okay... motor not work...!" After being hit by ground fire thru the fuel tanks they continued directing fire until the engine quit and glided all the way from the MLR to the field just touching down on the runway threshold. 05/17/2006 @ 18:50 [ref: 13310] |
