The PBY-5A was used during WWII as a search/rexcue vehicle. The staging area for S/R crews was at Keesler AFB. I was in the 2nd E/R Sqdn briefly and later was Sqdn Inspector in the staging area. All our aircraft were PBY-5A's designated OA-10A. I'm not aware they were ever designated A-10A(Not to be confused with present day A-10 Warthog). Further, the OA-10A used a crew of three, pilot, copilot and engineer. A very reliable old bird that could fly "forever".
