Dave Dwiggins Alexandria, IN | Enjoy viewing and reading about the F-102s in Southeast Asia. Currently I am researching and will be writing a history of Udorn RTAFB in Thailand. We certainly would enjoy receiving information about the 509th FIS deplyment to Udorn and would especially welcome any photos for the publication. All credits will be presented with each photo or story.

Tom Inguagiato Harvey, LA | I was with the 82nd FIS at Travis AFB 1963-66.
We moved the whole sqrdn to Naha,Okinawa in
'66. Move titled "Thirsty Camel" The 102's were
fitted with re-fueling booms and painted with
"camo". I was at Naha AFB for 6 mos with the
Falcon Missile mtce crew. The 102's replaced a sqrdn of
F4's that were needed in Viet Nam...

Chris Konze , IL | Barry, I look forward to any pics you can post. I left in mid-April 71, so I wasn't around for the final fly by. I enjoyed the TDYs to Suwon as well. I recently Google Earthed a satellite picture of the base and surrounding area. You wouldn't recognize the place. The only thing that looks the same are the runway and the Quonset-shaped revetments we used on the far side of the base. There is now a tunnel that goes under the RR tracks at the main gate, and Saeru-Dong across the street is gone, as we knew it. Looks like a big modern city like Seoul. Gives new meaning to the phrase from Star Wars, "Long, long ago; in a galaxy far, far away". 02/16/2008 @ 09:41 [ref: 19691] |
Barry Brightman Charlestown, RI | I was stationed at Naha, Okinawa in 1970-71. I was a Crew Chief with the 82nd FIS, and was there for the decommisioning. I'll see if I can upload a pic of the final fly-by. It was my first duty in the Air Force and quite alot of fun, especially the TDY's to Suwon, Korea. 02/15/2008 @ 04:36 [ref: 19682] |
Chris Konze , IL | You're right, Gerry. That fire control system for the missiles and rockets was very sophisticated and way ahead of its time. Today that technology is easy, but back in the tubes and resistors days, it was nothing less than phenomenal. The maintainer tech school for that system was the longest of all back then, 52 weeks I believe. Training an Amn to fix it took as long as to train a Lt to fly! 01/25/2008 @ 15:30 [ref: 19429] |
gerry phillips rowlett, TX | I was assigned to the 525th at Bitburg in 1959 (I think) after USAFE deactivated the 440th when the F-86D went away. I worked in Maintenance control with WO Cosmo R Manino. Loved the job and got to know the specialists and the aircraft well. Beautiful airplane. The MG-12 radar that controlled the Hughes missiles was really, really complicated for its day, and all TUBES. As I remember there where about 100 discrete black boxes, all interconnected with cables and canon plugs, what a huge number of failure points! I flew a couple of radar missions on the radar simulator from tape recordings of real intercepts, great stuff! I also worked for Major Barton and Captain Steffensen, the Chief of Maintenance and
Maintenance Officer respectively, what great people. The commander at that time was Lt Col Carson. 01/03/2008 @ 16:51 [ref: 19142] |
chris konze O\'Fallon, IL | I was an avionics equipment repairman with the 51st FIW, 82 FIS at Naha AB, Okinawa from 69 - 71. We were on rotational TDY to Suwon AB, Korea during my time with the wing. I went there three times. The last one was in the Spring of 71, just a couple of months before the Kelly AFB crew dismantled the last Duece. In the Summer of 70 we even picked up a few of the Clark AB birds that we flew until the end. What a great plane! This was my first AF job and this great A/C was already on her last legs. There was nothing like seeing her take off with full burner at night and see her look like a triangle in the sky as she flew in the pattern. Nothing we have today looks like that. I went on to work on Buffs and Tankers at Wright-Pat, then got out to go to school. I came back in the AF in late 76 for OTS as a meteorologist and there was an F-102 on display at the Medina Annex. Good luck, I guess. Never saw a Duece again, but still the neatest A/C I ever saw.

Roger Pile, Lt Col, USAF, Ret Tampa, FL | First checked out in the 102 at Tyndall in 1959 then went to Thule, Travis and Naha (with the air-to-air refueling Larry Mize wrote about) in 1966. After an 18 month break in an MBA program at Syracuse, got recurrent at Perrin and joined the 509th at Clark, deploying to Danang, Bien Hoa, Udorn, Don Muang and Tainan. Was also at Keflavik in 72-73 when the 57th converted from the Deuce to the F-4, but only flew the T-33 as I was only there for a year on the Iceland Defense Force Staff as J-3/5 and ADC wouldn't approve a "local area" checkout despite my 1800 hours and IWS graduate status. Came back from Clark around 1968 to ferry another F-102 across. This time, just me and the tanker, not the squadron move Larry planned and the 64th later performed. Believe I'm the only one who's flown the 102 across the Pacific twicw. Pleawse advise if anyone knows different. Loved the aircraft and the 9 years I spent in it. 04/16/2007 @ 08:06 [ref: 16197] |
