Aircraft NICKNAMES and NAMES are two entirely different terms. DESIGNATION is a third term used to identify an aircraft. Example: Boeing [manufacturer] B-52 [designation] Stratofortress [name] "BUFF" (Big Ugly Fat F---er)[nickname]. Names are officially designated by the manufacturer and/or the service. However, nicknames are unofficial, they're earned due to the aircraft's appearance, performance, role... Personal trivia: As of August 16, 2001, I've flown in 230 different types of aircraft - and always looking for ways to scrounge rides in different types. I live between Ottawa and Montreal. Any offers? Any comments? RSVP. I'm not just a nut, I'm an aircraft nut, a photography nut and a flying nut. No, as far as I know, I do not have a nickname, but I have researched hundred of aircraft ones: "SPAD", "Bug Smasher", "Klunk", "Stringbag", "Huey", ....
