April 1952 I was assigned to Headquarters Allied Air Forces Northern Europe (AAFNE) stationed to Olso, Norway. The Commanding General at the time was Major General Robert K. Taylor who reqested my assignement to be his Flight Operations Officer, and His Pilot. His Airplane was a USAF C-117B. Our home base was Fornebu Airport near Oslo. The Oslo airport and many other airports throughout the cammand were limited by runway lengths , navigation aids and location in Norway, Denmark and some in the UK, which did not allow us to support a C-54. The ILS runway at Fornebu was only 3900ft. long and with a 1700ft. hill rising from the threshold far end of the runway.

The airplane was AF 2547, a DC-3 with 21 seats, Airline galley and lavatory with a small loading door, a radio operators station in the forward baggage compartment. It was powered by two P&W 1830-92 engines and Hamilton Standard propellers. General maintenance was accomplished by
the crew chief and other crew members other maintenance was handled by SAS airlines there. For other maintenance we had to ferry the Airplane to the USAF Depot at Burtonwood England.

Additional note: C-117B #2548 was stationed in Italy with the USAF Air South Command. I believe that these aircraft were production DC-3, purchased by the Air force in 1945.

I personally have flown about 9000 hrs in DC-3/C-47 I retired from Eastern Airlines in February 1981 at age sixty.
