JIM MAGOWAN ANCHORAGE, AK | What I hate about sites like this is they make me 'homesick' for my Helios. Almost all of my flying was in Alaska but years ago, I had a memorable experience 'outside.' We were going to visit a friend in D.C. Not being familiar with airports back east I went to the chart. There was this huge airport called Dulles and a smaller one called National. As usual, with a Helio, I opted for the 'small' airport.
While flying over MD the transponder stopped blinking. As we approached the DC TCA, ATC said they could not see us on radar and could not let us enter the TCA until they could see us. Since we were about 100 yards from the TCA which had a 1,500 foot ceiling at that time I asked for clearance below the TCA to Washington National.
We had a little difficulty finding Washington National and my wife kept yelling that I was headed for the Whitehouse and they were going to shoot us down until I spoted the runway. On final the controller asked if I could land shot of an intersecting runway becasue it had landing traffic. I asked how much runway I had before the intersection. 1600 feet gave me about 1400 feet to spare so we landed. When we got out of the Helio the sound of jets was deafening. I realized that this 'little' airport was like Merrill Field in Anchorage except instead of hundreds of C-150's and 185's taking off they were all Boeing 727's and 737's.
It turned out the transponder could not be repaired before we left. When I asked for clearance out under the TCA the tower wanted assurance I would not come back until the transponder was repaired. I told him I was going back to Alaska where I belonged and had no intention of flying into National again. He laughed and cleared us on our way.

Stephen Ruby Oshkosh, WI | For operations into small confined area's there is no finer airplane built, excellent slow-speed handling ideally suited for "search and rescue" 09/06/2007 @ 09:41 [ref: 17851] |
Mark Kirsch Hagerstown, MD | We use a H395 for aerial mapping, in fact it was the first aircraft the company bought for aerial mapping. Our stable now encompasses Piper twin pistons, Cessna twin turbo-props and a Gulfstream...all as platforms for aerial mapping. The Helio, "Yellow Bird" is my favorite and the most loved of the bunch. As an old mechanic I really love maintaining it...ours has no military history, but I remember these birds from my tours in SEA 35 years ago. Ours is s/n 514 and will remain in top shape for the foreseeable future. 08/21/2007 @ 08:04 [ref: 17701] |

Rachel Vendretti Padstow, OTH | I love this site, it brings back lots of memories. My grandad did lots of flying in planes like these, and when I was very young he used to take me to the big hangars and let me sit in the pilot's seat. THANKS! 06/06/2007 @ 04:16 [ref: 16760] |
