I was on HSL-30 Det 31, working for ComSixthFlt on the Springfield and Little Rock , Geate It. 1973-1974. Our Helo had snoopy painted on the side, B/N 151309.

Lt. Tom Dean was flying to Naples one afternon and had a tail rotor break in half in flight Good landing saving all on board he was an incredible pilot.

I was raised in Bloomfield, CT until 1972, and remember well the development, and testing of the H-2's as they buzzed our house all the time. I enter the Navy in 1977, and was stationed on board the USNS Chauvenet (TAGS-29) with OCUNIT 4 in Panama, CZ. Tango Delta-17 was our H-2D with HSL-31. Butch McKee, Phil Knot, and all the support crew were just fantastic. I flew, and partied with them many times, and they were amazing men in their flying machine! Hated to hear the "MayDay" after one of those "tail rotor gear lights" that seem to pop up, including one time flying with them. Horse-collared out of TD-17 6-10 times into jungle with the Seabees, setting up those needed ARGO, and RAYDIS sites so we could survey the Panamian coastlines in 1977-78. One of the new pilots in '78 clipped a hanging vine with the rotors on a supply run to one of our new sites in JACQUE, near the Columbian border, and barely made it back to the ship. Many great stories, and pics in my albums. The H-2D was a workhorse, and remember the "rush" running under a hovering bird, and slinging a cargo net to her belly!! Good times, hard work, but a lot of satisfaction, and accomplishment in that tour!! Best regards to all my shipmates who served in the OCUNIT's. Mike Forader, LCDR, USNR-RET
