I was assigned to the 551st AEW&C Wg, Otis AFB, MA, from Dec '66 - Apr '69. As a crew chief within the 551st Organizational Maintenance Squadron (OMS) I was assigned to "crew" EC-121H aircraft serial no. 55-5266, and later 55-5264. One note of significance. On Apr 25, 1967, I assisted on the -1 preflight and launch of aircraft 53-0549. I will never forget that tragic day since that's the day the 551st Wing lost its third Connie in 21 months. 53-0549 crashed in Nantucket at approx 7pm, with only one survivor. We also lost our Wing Commander (Col James P. Lyle). What haunts me at times is the fact that on that fateful day I assisted Col Lyle during his "walk-around" -1 preflight inspection before he departed on that active AAD mission.

For anyone seeking additional information about the loss of aircraft 53-0549, or the other two lost Connies (aircraft 55-5262, Nov 11, 1966 OR 55-0136, Jul 11, 1965)

In April 2005 a detailed article was written about these mishaps that was published in the Air Force Magazine...

Incidentally, there's an excellent paper back book written by A.J, Northrup, entitled Fifty Fallen Stars. It pays tribute to the fifty crew members who perished during those three mishaps. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking additional information regarding these three incidents. Its available at Barnes & Noble or Amazon,com...

My uncle Larry Denning Rucker was aboard the EC-121H model tail No. 55-5262 when it went down off Nantucket island on 11 Nov 1966. I am desperately seeking photos, details and data related to this accident or him. If anyone has anything, please respond.

I am looking for a model of this plane (EC-121H). My father flew one while he was in the Air Force.
