Guy E. Franklin Deatsville, AL | When the Navy ordered two F3H-1 prototypes on September 30, 1949 the intent was to come up with a high-performance interceptor that had capabilities equal to its land-based contemporaries.
Unfortunately, the Demon's powerplant, the new Westinghouse J-40 engine, failed to reliably deliver adequate power. This meant that the Demon couldn't perform up to expectations. All remedies failed until, eleven accidents later, in June 1955, an F3H-2 with a more powerful Allison J-71-A-2 engine finally showed that it could perform as promised.
There followed a service career during which Demons served on shipboard in three basic variants, determined by how they were modified to carry different missiles. The Pima Air Museum's example carried varied loads for operation as a strike fighter.
519 Demons had been built when production ceased in November 1959.
