Larry West Tum Tum, WA | The model OTW manufacture started in 1936 with the first OTWs having a 125 HP Series 40 Warner engine. In 1939 approval was granted for the installation of the Series 50 Warner engine. In 1941 the approval was given for the installation of a 145 HP Warner and the aircraft designation was OTW-145. The OTW was initially designed as a sport aircraft and is fully aerobatic to include inverted oil and fuel systems. It was one of the first aircraft approved for use for the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1939. Manufacture of the OTW was curtailed in 1942 due to strategic materials used in making the aircraft and scarcity of engines. This is what led to the installation of the Kinner R-56 engines on some later models. The Kinner equiped OTWs had 160 HP engines, hence the designation OTW-160. In September of 1942 production of the OTW was halted. It should be noted the OTW was Al Meyers' first aircraft design and to date, the has been no Airworthiness Directives issued on the OTW! 02/01/2001 @ 09:48 [ref: 1511] |
Michael D. Barg Minot, ND | I own a Meyers OTW 160. Only 102 were ever made at the Meyers Factory in Tecumseh, MI. The factory is still there and about 60 OTW's still exist. Approximately 40 are still flying. The rest are in restoration like mine.
It was built for the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP)to build a corps of pilots for the USA to pick from at the outbreak of WW2.
Later< Meyers built sveral other typw of aircraft. The most famous being the very fast Meyers 200.
This is the same Meyers company that built Meyers boats.
