My Dad used to work on H21's in the Army in the late 1950's at Fort Riley,Kansas and Fort Greely, AK - crashed a few times in them, too but the snow always seemed to break the fall pretty well. Someday I hope I can get to CA and see one actually FLY!

I used to enjoy watching a fleet of these scramble in the mid to late 60's. I was an air traffic controller 75 ft. overhead. The sound of those big radial engines firing up and not hitting evenly at first, but leaving the ground ASAP all in sequence with two at a time till all ten were up and off was quite a production.
As a biplane may look like a dragonfly, these really acted like them. To me they are the steam engine of helicopters as they belched smoke and popped off to a roaring start.

I was a mechanic on CH-21B's from 1960-1964, with the 1376th CAMRON, 1370th Photo Mapping Wing, Turner AFB, Albany, GA. My favorite,53-4324, "Shaky Magoo", has been in the Pate Transportation Museum, Cresson, TX, since 1970.

You can get the information about how to join at www.classicrotors.org, you can join online. There are different membership rates. The cheapest is $50 (14 and under) $100 for an individual membership. Just as a side note, after riding in the H-21 I went and took some helicopter flight lessons and now have my private helicopter lisence.

The H-21 is still in the museum in Ramona California, and it is still flying to air shows, it is still beieved to be the last one still flying, it is in beautiful condition. It is definitely worth going to Ramona to check it out, along with all of the rest of the classic rotorcraft they have. Also look for Classic Rotors at California air shows...

We made our flight. What a blast! I haven't had that much time in forever. If you ever get a chance to fly in the H-21 with Classic Rotors I highly recommend it. We flew right up the coast from LAX to opoint Mugu. At LAX we flew below 150 feet. It was amazing
