| Jeff Forward Woodland, Calif., CA | I am doing research into my grandfather's aviation career. I recently received documents from the OX5 Club, of which he was a member, and in his documents it's indicated he worked on Amelia Earhardt's Pitcairn Autogyro,
My grandfather worked at Bettis field from 1930-1932 before attending college at Penn State and studying engineering. He was also a member of the Aircraft Material Engineers Society, I think that is the correct title. I know that Amelia broke the altitude record in 1931 and wondered if anyone knew where this feat occurred? mind on the person who took the photos of the autogyro landing on the USS Langley. My father took a picture of Yeoman Lyle Edgar Wood on the Langley, and called him an "amateur photographer". 1932. He took photgraphs of the Pitcairn XOP-1 making the first autogyro landing on an aircraft carrier. There are eight of them, and I truly believe that he was one who took the photos. The photos show the landing and the takeoff, as well as members of the crew inspecting the strange-looking aircraft.
