I spent lots-of-time on these HR2S choppers as an Aviation Electronics Navigation Technician in New River Marine Air Base, Langley AFB, and Cape Canaveral, FL in support of the first (Shepard, Grissom and Glenn) "manned" Space Shots. Great memories and exciting times for a young "red-neck" from east Arkansas.

MY DAD PAUL E MAYER USED TO TEST THESE BETWEEN '56 AND '58 STATIONED AT PAX AND NEW RIVER. HIS LAST FLIGHT ENDED IN A CRASH INTO THE POTOMAC WITH BILL QUICK IN DEC. 1958 RESULTING IN A BROKEN BACK. BUT DESPITE THE BROKEN BACK, PULLED SEVERAL CREW OUT OF THE WATER TO AWAIT RESCUE THE NEXT DAY AS NO ONE KNEW THEY WERE IN THE WATER UNTIL A PASSING BOAT HEARD THE SCREAMS.
