This was the last version of the Spitfire to be powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. According to my information, this model was introduced quicker than normal to be able to meet the challenge the new Focke-Wulf 190 fighter presented. Its also one of the two player Spitfire models on Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator program.
