 | After the Navy was done with the two XF4D's, they were bailed to GE flight test at Edwards AFB for engine development tests. The #1 airplane (124586) was used for spare parts, while 124587 was used for the actual tests. GE removed the Westinghouse XJ40 and installed a J79, and later the CJ805 commercial variant of the J79. After the program was over, both airplanes were taken to China Lake, where 124587 was put on display and 124586 was used for firefighting training and eventually broken up. 04/29/2005 @ 02:58 [ref: 10070]

 | I was in VF-141 at Nas Miramar in early 1956 when we transition from F2H-3 Banshee aircraft to F4D-1 Skyray
aircraft. We made two cruises with the F4D-1, one on
the USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 in 1957 and one on
the USS Ranger CVA-61. The Skyray has always been my
favorite fighter, Douglas knew how to make them. I
loved to watch them go almost straight up from a cat
shot. I was an AO-2 when I was in F4D's.

 | The Naval Museum of Ordinance and Armament at China Lake has a freshly painted XF-4D Skyray sitting in front of the old "O" club. 07/30/2000 @ 21:40 [ref: 518]
