Frank Bruni Port Angeles,, Washington | In looking at a web site some time ago regarding the final disposition of B-47s, good old Tripple Nickle went to B47 heaven. Landing gear issues were not the only problem that thing had. I remember it flew sort of funny, had a tendancy to land one wing low and took forever to get off the ground. All these years later, I believe that airplane was possessed. 02/08/2007 @ 12:28 [ref: 5604] |

Frank Bruni , Washington | I was assigned to the 340th F.M.S. from 10/61 to 8/63 and was probably the last man processed out of the 340th BW when the 351st S.M.W. took over. During my tour of duty I helped recover a B-58 wreck and sadly a B-47 that burned at H2 in May of 62. The B-47 now on display was originally from OCAMA and named the Oklahoma Sooner. I was in the paint shop at the time and had a hand in repainting it and moving it. 02/02/2006 @ 20:46 [ref: 4764] |
Francis E. Nolan , New Jersey | Worked in control tower at Sedalia AFB from December 1954 to January 1956 when I was discharged. Great memories of the beautiful B-47's (with JATO) and the lumbering KC-97s and the long, long flights of those B-47 crews. Loved that little town of Knobnoster!! 04/12/2005 @ 22:50 [ref: 3977] |
Jim Garland Ten Mile, Tennessee | Stationed at Whiteman AFB 340th Bomb Wing FMS Ground Power hanger 04/60 to 12/61 when I left for the Goose. Arrived at WAFB on a sunday night for clearing in monday morning fresh and green from tech school at Chanute AFB. At 4a.m. monday morning, they blew those klaxtons for an ORI. I had no idea what was going on, just that people were runninto the flight line and I was terrified ! I didn't know any better, I thought we were at war. 03/01/2005 @ 14:10 [ref: 3863] |
ROBERT LATHAM , California | I was the crew chief on the FB-111A 69-0509 in the late 70s while stationed at Plattsburgh AFB NY. For years I had at times tried to find out where this aircraft ended up, and even thought it may have been sold to the Austrailians. Then today while on the internet I finally found her on display at Whiteman AFB. It blew me away, and made me glad it was still in the USA and fairly reachable.
I became crew chief on \"509\" in 1977 when I volunteered to participate in the \"bomb-comp\" also known as \"Giant Voice\". The 380th bomb wing that year did win the Fairchild Trophy due to the efforts of all personnel involved from Planners, Aircrews, and Maintenance folks.
After the bomb comp I remained as crew chief on \"509\" for a couple more years. The jet became the wing commanders aircraft for a while too. He wanted that aircraft because of its great performance and reliability during and after the bomb comp. I liked it too for those reasons and more.
The FB-111A was then and now my favorite aircraft, of which I have many fond memories. I went to Loring AFB one time in the winter, snow was very deep. I went there to recover 509 after it landed with engine troubles. We performed an engine change, and left for home soon after. That was the first time I had ever seen the \"BIG BIC\" in action at night. With the aircraft dumping fuel and with afterburner engaged it threw out quite a flame, I fwas impressed .
There are many folks I remember from there I hope see this site and write some words. I am presently a crew chief on the KC-10 at Travis AFB as an \"ART\" and love the life of working and flying on a great aircraft. Take Care
I have some pictures of 509 shich I\'ll submit if anyone is interested 08/27/2004 @ 18:48 [ref: 3369] |
