I was with the 1st. Supply Sqd. from Dec.1960 to Aug. 1964. We ran an around the clock operation for the F106 mechanics who needed any part. Around 6:30 pm on October 22, 1962 I was at work when two air policemen came in looking for me and another airman who was off duty at the time. They drove me over to my barracks where two other air policemen had already cut off the lock to my locker and were packing my duffle bag. After they found the off duty airman we were taken out to the flight-line and put in a U3a with a major who flew us down to Patrick AFB in fla..Thats how the Cuban crisis started for me. I was also in a reserve air police unit and wound up pulling guard duty near the crash site when a KC-97 crashed in March of 1961.

I was assigned to the 329th FIS at George AFB Victorvile, CA from Jan 1961 to July 1963. And then to the 84th FIS at Hamilton AFB San Rafel, CA from Oct 71 through Jun 72. The 329th has a reunion in Reno every year around October. One of the 329th F106B 158 is on display at Edwards AFB Century Circle. The Circle was dedicated in August of 2007. Great memories of the F106.

My dad, Major Clark J. (Bud) Abbott flew the six in the 71 FIS at Selfridge from 61-64. Does that ring a bell with anyone? I would just like to communicate with remaining old buds about the AK and Cuba deployments and life in general at the alert barn. Thanks.

I got my first taste of the 106 on 23 Dec 1968 when the 48th returned from Korea to Langley. I was fresh out of tech school and a crew chief. After returning from Thialand in 70, I went to Wurtsmith and worked on 6's again until the 2nd FIS was deactivated. I returned to Langley in 73 to 75 and worked on the 6's again. Great aircraft. Sleek and fast for that time. I look all the time on the web for info and pics.

Became part of the 94th fis in 1959 stationed at Selfridge AFB Mich. At that time we were flying F86D's under ADC. A major upgrade to the F-102 also in 59. Later as I remember it, was sent to San Diego for schooling on the F-106. Convair was the contractor and also responsible for the training. We flew out of miramar NAS Clairmont Mesa. I was still with the 94th fis in 1962, October during the Cuban Crisis. Flew combat air patrol during those tring times. Wurtsmith AFB home of the Six Pack saw duty in Canada and Greenland. All this time in the venerable F-106 Delta Dart. Some kind of a ride. This airplane never let me down. From a maintenence standpoint it was rareley down.

Thank You Col. L E Sears USAF Ret.
