Before you talk about somthing know what you are talking about the only branch of the us that flew the av8a/c or the av8b was usmc and there was only one mortor and that was it its lift was provided by th 4 rotating nozzels.I know this becuse I was with vma 231 from 1982 to 1985 6335 avi shop with a geat bunch of guy Like Sam Fish and Cris Chapen. and if you two are out there hi.

The discription up top is not very accurate. The av8a was never overhauled to become a B model. The AV8A was built by hawker sidley of england, the AV8B or harrier 2 was a colaberation between Hawker and Mcdonald douglas. in the US the jet was flown only by the USMC, it was also flown by the Brits and the Spanish. In spain it was called the Matador. Also the only C model ever flown was out of Pax river navel test center, that was a modified AV8A. I worked on the A and B models in VMA-231 and 542. also worked IMA engine shop and Test CEll

I worked on the A version in the 70's, was is Powerplants. VMA-513 and VMA-542. It is called the jump jet, and also had the nick name of the widow maker back in those days.

The AV8 series (A, B, C) is NOT in service with the US NAVY, but with the USMC. Any interesting facty is the C model was in service before the B was. The C is a modified A, whereas the B is an entirely new airframe, built of composites and aluminum.

The aircraft uses a SINGLE engine, vectoring its thrust through 4 rotatable nozzles.

Only the media- and those who get their often incorrect information from that source- call the Harrier a jump jet; in fact, it is often viewed by the crews as a term of derision. The aircraft does not jump as much as it lifts off smoothly in all phases of flight, conventional or vertical.

For the record, I was a hydraulics mechanic on A's from 1977-1982 and have several hours in the back seat of the TAV8A (the 2 seat trainer version of VMAT-203).

The jump jet as it is know as, is a usful tool in booth the british and US navys and airforce. This plane lifts off with seperate jets than its main.
