Hi Steve, George's eldest son, Jonathan and I are reviewing and researching the children's father...George Gernand. Jen already connected. We thoroughly enjoyed your story about George. We agree...those glasses! When he looked over them, right at you...you paid attention! Thanks for sharing your memories with the world. He is a man that deserves to be remembered.

MANY MOONS AGO ME SP5 STEVE 'BUBBA' GARDNER,CW4 GEORGE GERNAND,CW4 VIC 'THE TROLL'MUSANTE AND SSG BOB NOWAK HOISTED HH52A #1429 ONTO THE DECK OF THE INTREPID.THE MISSION WAS WELL PLANNED OUT WITH AN R.O.N IN THE CITY. WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO FLY OVER BLDGS AND BRIDGES... BUT A LAST SECOND DECISION FLEW US OVER ONE OF THE BRIDGES,OH WELL.I HAD THE 52A ABOUT 25 FEET BELOW THE GEAR AND WITH GEORGE AT THE STICK WITH GOOD FORWARD AIR SPEED THE 52 FLEW NOSE FIRST INTO THE WIND.WE ARRIVED AT THE MUSEUM AND I LOOKED OUT MY WINDOW TO SEE HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS AND A DECK CREW READY FOR US TO RELEASE THE 52 ONTO THE 'X'ON THE CARRIER.WE HOVERED,LOAD TOUCHED THE DECK,I RELEASED THE LOAD ONLY TO INSTANTLY SEE THE HELO ROLL QUICKLY AWAY WITH DECK CREW RUNNING AFTER IT,THE VIEW FROM THE F/E SEAT I CAN LOOK DOWN BETWEEN MY FEET,PILOTS CAN SEE FORWARD ONLY.AS WE DEPARTED GEORGE ASKED ME HOW EVERYTHING WENT BACK THERE,AS I WAS SAYING 'IT WENT GREAT' I SAW THE HELO BANG HARD NOSE FIRST INTO THE RAISED SAFETY NET AND THE TAIL WHEEL MAINTAINED AN INSTANT ALTITUDE.THE CREW ROLLED IT BACK INTO A SPOT ON THE DECK SO WE COULD LAND. ALL IN A DAYS WORK... NO BIG DEAL! I KNEW THE BRAKE T HANDLE HAD DROPPED AND RELEASED THE BRAKE PRESSURE ON THE 52 WHICH HAPPENED ALOT ON RUN UP.GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY OUR CREW.I HAD A FEELING I'VE SEEN THE 52'S TAIL NUMBER BEFORE.OUR COMMON USCG PRACTICE WAS TO STENCIL THE AIRSTATION LOGO UNDER THE S.A.R AIRCREWMANS SEAT,AND SURE ENOUGH THERE WAS THE NEW JERSEY STATE BIRD [MOSQUITO] PAINTED. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT... OUR S.O.P CHANGED AFTER THE ROLL AWAY 52. FROM THEN ON WE MADE SURE THE WHEELS WERE SECURELY LOCKED IN PLACE BEFORE HOISTING !!! P.S GEORGE CALLED ME INTO HIS OFFICE 2 WEEKS LATER WHEN HE RECIEVED THE VCR TAPE OF OUR MISSION.HE ASKED ME TO SHUT THE DOOR WHEN I WALKED IN.HE LOWERED HIS GLASSES TO THE TIP OF HIS NOSE LIKE HE ALWAYS DOES AND SAID WITH A LTTLE SNICKER " GOOD THING IT WAS BUILT TO LAND IN WATER,CAUSE IT ALMOST DEMONSTRATED IT FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES " HE NEVER KNEW WHAT WENT ON FROM MY SEAT,AND THAT WOULD COME IN HANDY ON CERTAIN MISSIONS!! THANX FOR EVERYTHING MUSEUM FOLKS,WE HAD A GREAT TWO DAY VISIT !! BUBBA

several years ago i was driving south on the west side highway when i noticed a a4c skyhawk on the flight deck. I was able to pull over to the side so i could get a better look. I could not believe my eye's this was the same plane from my squadron.I served with VA-66 from 1965-67 I was a plane capt. and i strapped many a pilot into that plane's seat.I had to get on that ship to get a closer look.I was stopped at the gate and told that the intrepid was closed.I told him i was from Upstate N.Y. (a lie) and that i was moving away (a lie)I showed him the plane i wanted to see The VA-66 on the side of the plane matched the tattoo i had on my arm. He called the office and they allowed me to go up to the flight deck. when i reached the plane the tears just started flowing.Unreal the emotion i felt that day.

Seeing this site, and looking at all the pictures has really inspired me to get more into Aviation. I hope that this summer I can actually go to see this museum as it looks amazing from everything I have seen here.
