I flew as a radar operator from 63 to 65 as part of the DEW line flying from Midway to the Aleutians and back. I enjoyed my service immensely and it was an important time of my life. It gave direction to my life. I enjoyed flying those sixteen hour flights looking for "Bad Guys".

Was stationed AEW Middet Sept. 62-63, was a ADR-2, worked power plants, DMI inspector, turn up trouble shooter, heavy maintenance. Remember many oily cylinder changes, hard to fight the injection lines, baffles.
This squadron with the three days on and one day off, really provided the AD's with all there practical factors for advancement.
Look back on it as a night mare, one year out my life that at 21 had better places to be. Put in for swap through navy times, would even have taken a ship. No luck.

I was stationed at Barber's Point 1959-1961 with AEWBARRONPAC. I volunteered to go to Midway in October of 59 for four months of TDY to be a cook on those "Flying Pig's". I will never regret those times, especially the forced landing we made at Adak. Those were a real workhorse of a plane.

I came out of the airforce in 1954 and started working at Lockheed Aircraft Service at Idlewild (JFK) airport on maintaince for the USAF's and the US Navy's RC-124s and WV-2 in 1955 thru 1958 when I left Lockheed for a FAA career.

I not only worked on the ground but was one of the few that also performed after maintence flight checks in the air to certify all of the electronics was working.

We had a great bunch of guys at Lockheed then... I later came across some of them in the FAA and renewed friendships.

Worked in maintance at Lockheed Aircraft Service at Kennedy
Airport from 1954 till 1966 and it was one of the best aircraft I worked on ever. The last day at Lockheed was on a WV-2.The aircraft was beautiful as all Connies were.
It did one hellof a job. Thanks Navy/Air Force

I spent a great year on Midway Island as an AE-3/AE-2 with AEWBARRSRONPAC and, to be honest, enjoyed the experience so much that I want to travel back to Midway as soon as it is reopened to tourism. The 121 is the most beautiful prop transport ever to take to the air and I was happy to put in many hours of flight time on the barrier. For those interested there is a MAT's 121 at the Camarillo, CA a/p that you can take a hop on when it is at airshows. Great plane and a great job.

I flew as a AEW crewman in AEWBARRSRONPAC from 1961-1964 out of Barber's Point Hawaii (/Midway.) It was a pleasant
life for a young man, but I was happy to return to civilian life after too many hrs in that noisy, slow, but reliable old plane.
