| bill goess gainesville, Florida | I was stationed at mcclellan from 1984-1991. I was a member of the 2951st clss. We were deployed many months out of the year but we did several projects while on base one was depot maint on F111 and A10 and also we supported the museum, i personally helped put together sev of the aircraft on display, i must say i was very sad to see the base close but very excited to see the museum still going strong,To all my past freinds that might read this please email a hello, i will come back to see the new museum 08/07/2007 @ 17:40 [ref: 6215] |
| Ray Meyer Sacramento, California | The Museum has only one F-105D s/n #62-4301 on display in our Air Park. The second F-105 listed s/n 54-100 has never been part of our collection. The aircraft was used as a test platform for performance date, modifications required and engineering changes. In 1956 the aircraft made a wheels-up landing. After repairs, the a/c flew an additional 233 hours, being retired in 1959. It was sent back to Republic in Farmington, NY for use in additional testing. It was then stored at the plant. Between 1965 and 1981, McClellan AFB was the depot maintenacne location for F-105s. In 1967, a group of McClellan F-105 specialists went back to Farmington and ook the aircraft apart. Most of the internal parts and systems were removed. The a/c was returned to McClellan, put back together, painted in Viet Nam camouflage and mounted on a pedestal. The base dedicated the monument in October 1967. As part of a base beautification project, the a/c and pedestal were removed in late 1988. | Raymond Meyer , California | The F-102/56-1140 arrived at McClellan AFB in 1985. The 431st Test & Evaluation Squadron (TAC), assigned to the 57th Fighter Weapons Wing, Nellis AFB, and a tenant unit at McClellan adopted the F-102 as a unit restoration project. The 431st Squadron history stretches back to WW2, in the Pacific Theater. The unit started out flying P-38s, and over time also flew P-51s, F-100s, F-102s, F-4s. As the 431st TES, the unit was responsible for testing aircraft components and weaponry in the F-111D/E/F. While assigned to USAF Europe the unit was stationed in Spain and Libya. The 431st TES painted the aircraft in the markings of the 431st Fighter Interceptor Sq, The Red Devils. These markings were picked not only to honor the 431st, but also to pay tribute to one of its commanders. On September 8, 1961, Lt. Col. McCabe, 431st Commander was killed when he drown after ejecting from a TF-102A with engine failure. His co-pilot successfully ejected and was rescued by a Navy helicopter in the Mediterranean Sea, ten miles southwest of Barcelona, Spain. Between Feb 1960 and Dec 1964, 56-1140 was assigned to the 509th Fighter Interceptor Sq and the 405th Fighter Wing at Clark AB, Philippines. From Dec 1964 until Jan 1977 when 56-1140 was dropped from the USAF inventory, the aircraft was assigned to the 154th Fighter Group, Hawaii Air National Guard, Hickam AFB. | Bob Glass Sunnyvale, California | While I really appreciate the amount of work done to the F-102A, I am saddened that they changed the tail number to 55-5431. Acourding to USAF records, they didn't have an F-102 with that tail number! Who pulled this number from where? 56-1140 was with the 509th FIS throughout the VN war. It was with on the earliest deployments from Clark to Thailand and VN, in 1962 and 63. When I was at Clark, 140 was consistently one of the best A/C in the squadron. Again, I appreciate the work, but the changing of the tail number sucks. If you do all the work, why not get it right? I have put a picture of what 140 looked like on this site. Upon recent completion of its new 40,000 ft. sq., state-of-the-art, seven million dollar main display pavilion, the Aerospace Museum of California has embarked upon a new mission of furthering aerospace education on both the state and national level. With many interactive displays, more than 30 examples of actual aircraft in its air park, and with a continuing series of special aviation-related exhibitions ('The Da Vinci Experience' is the latest, scheduled to open in April), flight simulators, rocket engines, and much, much more, the new museum has emerged as one of the finest in the entire western United States. The latest aircraft to be fully restored there is former 5th Fighter Interceptor Squadron Convair F-106A Delta Dart 59-0010, a Mach 2+ ADC air defense 'Sierra Hotel' performer of the Cold War era and former NASA 'Project Eclipse' proof of concept research vehicle.
