Tom Nebel Clarksville, TN | I was in the first USAF class to be "totally" trained to fly choppers by the US Army at Ft Wolters, TX(just outside Ft Worth) and then on the Ft Rucker, AL. THe first class began in Nov70. After we got our wings, there were 10 2Lt's and 1 1Lt, we were on to Hill AFB, UT and I was transitioned into CH-3E's with my first assignment to SOF at NKP, Thailand. Our training concluded in Nov71.
After training it was on to Clark AB, Philippines for survival school. While at Clark USAF decided to put in the HH-53's at NKP. I called MPC and they indicated since I was a 2Lt that I might try another assignment where I could immediately fly H-3's. There were two H-3 units at Clark. One was attached to the Fighter Wing(base flight) and the other to MAC in rescue. They had a slot open in base flight and that's where I was assigned.
Our mission was to support whatever missions the base needed. One of our primary missions was resupplying the GCI(ground controlled intercept) sites that were located to the far reaches of the PI(Philippine Islands). Since the PI is composed of 7000 islands we all felt like were flying for Ricardo Monteblan to Fantasy Island.
We also flew VIP's to various points which also included the US Embassy in Manila. This was a fantastic tour!
The CH-3E was a very dependable chopper and fun to fly. I had orders to be in the first all chopper trained USAF pilots to trained in jets. I opted to depart the service at this time. The 5 years I spent flying the CH-3E was very worthwhile and one I enjoyed immensely! 12/23/2008 @ 05:17 [ref: 23314] |
George Ayton Orillia, ON | Can anyone in this group tell me the way to start the 3 engine helo CH53?
I have purchased it for my simulator (Flight Simulator X), but can't get the engines to stay on. The jets just wind up, engage the props, then quit...
I would really appreciate the procedure...being told to me..
George.

chris tart Windsor, CA | I was attached to the 4401st Helocopter Squadron at Eglin in 1965. We were sent TDY with the first 2 Jolly Greens to NKP and attached to Det 1 of the 38th ARRSq. We had Ch-3C # 676 and 685 and we were there from June of 65 through October of the same year. 03/30/2008 @ 07:54 [ref: 20294] |
Bill Moon Jackson, TN | As an Avionics Tech and Superintendent in the 100 SRW, I worked on the CH-3 with MARS at Davis Monthan, OL20 at Bien Hoa and as needed at DaNang, later at the 6514 Test Squadron at Hill AFB, Utah. Not much problem with CH-3 Nav Aids. Most of the work was on the DC-130,U-2 and in the early days the SPA 147,BQM 34. I as also at Holloman AFB, NM during the 154 RPV program when as I remember some of the crews were in doubt as to wheather the CH-3 had caught the 154 or visa versa and the CH53 was being considered for the MARS.
Does anyone have or know where I can buy or scan a copy of the CH-3 in camofloge with a RPV in tow? I found one early copy with the CH-3 before repaint, Just didn't look normal. Speaking of normal, it always seemed strange when the CH-3s would follow I-10 east then follow the two lane south when going to the range.

Richard M. McCabe II Florence, SC | My father, Maj. Dick McCabe, was a Dust Devil from Nov '68 to Nov '69 with the 21st SOS. He piloted the Jolly Green Giant. My father passed away recently, 8-10-07, and I was wanting to let others know of his passing and to find out who served with him.
Thank you 08/25/2007 @ 20:06 [ref: 17758] |
Stanley Delgado Bremerton, WA | I was stationed at D-M in the late 60's. And as a member of the 100 SRW,I flew with the CH-3E's at Da-Nang as a recon camera tech for the MARS drones. Over the past 40 years I have recalled many fond memories of that wonderful old bird. I have been fortunate to revisit the Tucson Air Museum several times since my Air Force days ended in 1969.The CH-3E will always live on in my memories of my flying days in South East Asia. 04/11/2007 @ 08:44 [ref: 16154] |
