In September 1931, seven years
after the official formation of the Royal
Canadian Air Force, the arrival of two flights
of aircraft from No.2 (Army Cooperation) and
No.3 (Bomber) Squadrons from Camp
Borden marked the commencement of
operational activities at RCAF Station
Trenton.
Since that small beginning, activities
have continued at an unrelenting pace,
through World War 2, the Korean War, the
"Cold War"', the Gulf War, and United Nations
peacekeeping duties around the world.
Servicemen and women from
Trenton, together with their counterparts
throughout the Canadian Forces, have made
an outstanding contribution to the
preservation of world peace and democracy,
creating a heritage whose conservation is of
the utmost importance.
In 1984, the role played by the Royal
Canadian Air Force in that heritage was
commemorated by the opening of the RCAF
Memorial Museum at Trenton. Unlike others,
the Museum is the only one in Canada
dedicated to the memory of the many men
and women of the RCAF, its predecessor
and successor organizations, and especially
to those who died while serving their country.
The Museum is situated within an
Air
Park which contains an extensive
collection
of aircraft, ranging from the venerable
DC3
Dakota of World War 2 tame, to the
newest
arrival, a MIG 21 tighter. After seeing
active
service with both the former Soviet and
East
German Air Forces, this aircraft was one
of
many which became surplus when East
and
West Germany reunited. It was donated
by
the German government to thank the
RCAF
for its many years of service in Germany,
and
to symbolize the end of the Cold War.
Share in celebrating the heritage
of
the Royal Canadian Air Force by visiting
the
Air Park and Museum. A visit will highlight
the
outstanding success which has been made
in
preserving artifacts and memorabilia
relating
to the RCAF years, and even dating back
to
the Royal Flying Corps of World War 1.
The
variety and magnitude of the collection,
which
has grown steadily since 1984, is
most
impressive, and visitors young and old
will
find something of interest to all.
