The F101B was a hell of a aircraft. 08/16/2008 @ 04:49 [ref: 22469] |
Jon Matthews Wesley Chapel, FL | Randall,
I think I remember a "Hendricks". Tall, skinny and wore glasses??? I left Charleston New years Eve 1966 and went to Lockbourne AFB in Columbus ,OH and work on updating the MG-13 radar system to the config. with the IR senser. Got out in June of 1967. Went to work for the LearJet Corp. working on the auto pilot system on the Lear 23, 24, and 25. I did come to Savannah to work on the electrical system on the G-1 thru G-5 while working for JET Electronics(part of LearJet) in Grand Rapids, MI. We developed the first 3000va solid state inverter for corporate aircraft.
Still can't forget the ol' 444th FIS. Had more fun there than any other time in my life. If I could have stayed there I probably would have re-enlisted.
Later,
Jon

Randall Kicklighter Dallas, GA | Dear Mr. Matthews,
Just saw your post of 70-322 at the open house we had back in 65'. I have some photos also, just got to find them. Also, did you know Kelly Hendricks. He came from Savannah, GA., as did myself.
My last day there in Charleston was 9/30/66. Went home to Savannah, left the next week for New York with Grumman Acft. Worked out of Savannah for a number of years on the Gulfstream 11 Corporate aircraft. 08/14/2008 @ 07:24 [ref: 22455] |
Jon Matthews Wesley Chapel, FL | I need to correct the base for the William Tell. It wasn't Eglin, it was Tyndall AFB, FL. At my age I'm lucky to remember my own name!
Spent my last enlisted 6 months at Lockbourne AFB, in Columbus OH. Could never forget that---hated the cild weather!!!! 08/11/2008 @ 13:51 [ref: 22435] |
Jon Matthews Wesley Chapel, FL | Was stationed at Charleston AFB form '64 to '67. Worked Weapons Control Systems(Radar). Also worked the alert barn after they took all the flightline people for Vietnam in '66.
I don't remember the "pink bird" but I do remember the time when we had a bird going to Det. 1 at Myrtle Beach and the flight line loaded the rotator door with the crews luggage etc. and had the door upside down and as soon as the nosegear went up, it tripped the roto-door switch to go back to the proper position and scattered luggage etc. all the end of the runway!!
Didn't know about the reunion in '09. Is it a go? Would love to go to it.
I think I have some more pics but I think they are of the flightline at Eglin for William Tell in '66.
Are there any more Radar people out there?

Lehman R Kicklighter Dallas, GA | One of the more interesting accounts that I have of the 444th, was the time one of our birds would not pass a FCF..On the fifth attempt to get it passed, the old man had our paint shop paint the entire plane passion pink. The next time it flew, it passed.

Lehman Kicklighter Dallas, GA | This is to Mac, that was my brid with the orange juice all over the side of the plane. When I loaded the weapons bay with all the junk our pilots carried on these TDY's, the bag of oranges did not make it in all the way. A ground crew member came over as I was rotating the door and the orange juice started runnig out, told him it was orange juice.
The best one that I can remember was on TDY to Eglin and the old man made a pass over the runway with a pari of black underware taped to the refueling boom...wish I had a picture of that.
Also, does anyone remember Sgt. Fuler or Sgt. Funderburke?

Lehman Kicklighter Dallas, GA | Stationed at Charleston AFB, Sc from 1962-1966. Plane Captain on 57-343 Voodoo. Would like to get in touch with one of the pilots and rear who flew my bird.
Drop me a line, especailly about the reunion in 09'.
Thanks,

Jack Varner , FL | I was a crew chief at Griffiss AFB 1963-1965, 49th FIS.
We lost three 101's, two with fatalities during that time period.
Most remembered was 59423 at the end of the runway.
59423 had a jammed nut on the horizontal stabilizer. Lost pilot and RO.
Another went in one of the Great Lakes due to pitch up condition. Lost pilot and RO.
The last one burned up on the run-up pad. Highest respect for the pilots and RO's who flew them.
